Create a new blogpost in your GCSE Media blog called 'Denotation and connotation'.

1) Write an analysis of the WaterAid advert above using denotation, connotation and analysis. What can you see? What are the deeper meanings in the advert? What does the advert communicate to the audience? How might an audience react after seeing the advert?

DENOTATION
This printed WaterAid advertisement, a young boy (symbolic  codes). Dry, deserted background (technical code) The boy has sad facial expressions (symbolic codes). His clothes look dirty and old. (symbolic code). The house looks small and old (technical codes)

CONNOTATION
The image is deliberately an extreme closeup of the boy to create a more intense atmosphere, They presented him as sad to make the audience feel sorry for them and make the audience donate in sympathy. This brand intentionally dresses him in these clothes to show how bad this situation is. They put his home in the background on purpose to show his living conditions and how much he needs help.

ANALYSIS
Perhaps WaterAid deliberately used a young black boy to reach to the audience to feel sympathy and have the urge to help the boy. The slogan '' Dig toilets Not graves '' was intentionally used to tell people if they dont start helping more and more people will die. They exaggerate this because they know audience will feel sympathetic and they will catch their attention as they put the photo of the young boy and that slogan together.
