Advertising: Key conventions

1.

 1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.

Print adverts use conventions like catchy headlines, joyful imagery, and branding to convey key messages. In a Maltesers ad, fun colors, happy people, and a playful slogan emphasize that the product is light-hearted, enjoyable, and perfect for sharing moments of happiness.

2) What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of persuasive techniques listed above?
Skittles' unique selling point is its bright, fruity flavors in colorful candy, with ads using humor and quirky visuals to make it fun and appealing.

1) An advert with a clear brand identity

An example of an advert with a clear brand identity is Nike's "Just Do It" campaign. It’s simple and inspiring, showing people pushing themselves to achieve their best, no matter who they are. The message is all about motivation and getting things done, which makes people instantly think of Nike when they see it.

2) An advert that uses shock tactics or a controversial idea

An example of an advert that used shock is Benetton’s “United Colors of Benetton” campaign. They showed shocking images, like a photo of a sick person or a bloody shirt from a war, to make people think about big social issues. The ads were surprising and got a lot of attention because they were bold and a bit uncomfortable.

3) An advert that creates a a strong emotional connection to the audienCES

An advert that creates strong emotional connection is The Guardian's "Three Little Pigs" ad. It tells a story of the classic fairy tale but with a twist, showing how the pigs work together to survive, highlighting the importance of truth, teamwork, and standing up for what's right. The ad makes people feel inspired and emotionally connected to the idea of community and shared responsibility.
